Microsoft has recently announced that Copilot in Planner (Preview) is rolling out to users. With the power of generative AI, Copilot in Microsoft Planner Premium streamlines the planning, management, and execution of your work, keeping you informed as you achieve your goals.
With simple prompts users can leverage Copilot to perform various activities within their plans based on their tailored needs.
How to access Copilot in Microsoft Planner Premium ?
Copilot is a Premium feature available to all Planner users who have a Project Plan 3 or a greater license.
If you do not have a premium Project license, you can
- Enable 30-day Trial License by clicking on the diamond icon within the app OR
- Request a Premium License from Microsoft365 admin center.
To leverage Copilot capabilites, Create a Premium Plan and Navigate to the Plan. Click on the Copilot icon that appears on the top right as highlighted below.
Note : The Microsoft Copilot icon does not appear for a Basic Plan even if you have the eligible License.

Copilot in Planning of Projects
Copilot assists users in planning activities such as setting goals, breaking down work, generating tasks, goals, and buckets based on user prompts, facilitating the creation of a comprehensive project plan.
You can also create a Plan from the scratch by just prompting with the title. The Copilot then create tasks and buckets relevant to the title.
Let us see few cases wherein how Copilot assits in planning a project.
Scenario 1 : Build a Plan
Prompt to Copilot as “Build a plan for Crisis Management”
Tasks Created :- Copilot creates a series of tasks related to the topic prompted.
Scenario 2 : Perform an action by mentioning the Task ID
Prompt to Copilot as “Break down Task #7 further”

You are also presented with the suggested prompts, in the Copilot pane as highlighted below. You can choose one from them OR choose to view all the prompts.

Here, you can connect your Goal to the related tasks by clicking ‘Connect tasks’ as highighted below.
Copilot in Execution of Projects
Microsoft Copilot helps in Effective Execution through streamline processes, identify next steps, and break down large tasks. It manages collaboration, tracks new goals, and identifies workload issues among team members.
For instance, we can prompt Copilot to list down a User’s tasks that are due this / next week
Also, we can prompt Copilot to see how the workload is shared among the team.
Copilot in the Tracking of Projects
Copilot aids in tracking complex plans by quickly surfacing necessary information about progress, priorities, and workload, ensuring teams stay informed and on track.
For instance, we can prompt Microsoft Copilot to State the progress of a Project.
