Quick Answer
The best ShareGate alternative depends on where your SharePoint content lives today and how your migration is priced.
- Apps4.Pro Migration Manager fits SharePoint Online tenant-to-tenant moves where you also need to move other Microsoft 365 workloads, and where you want a price per installation instead of per user.
- AvePoint Fly and Quest (Content Matrix and On Demand Migration) fit large enterprises with on-premises SharePoint farms.
- BitTitan MigrationWiz fits projects where you want to pay per document library.
- Microsoft’s free SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) fits simple moves from SharePoint Server or file shares into Microsoft 365.
- Kernel and SysTools fit small projects where a one-time desktop license is enough.
Key Takeaways
- ShareGate Migrate is sold as an annual plan: Essentials starts at $5,995 for tenants of up to 250 employees, Pro at $9,995 for up to 1,000 employees, and Enterprise at $17,995 for 1,000+ employees. The plans allow 1, 5, and 25 machine activations respectively (ShareGate pricing).
- ShareGate’s Essentials plan does not include Exchange Online, Google Workspace, Purview sensitivity label, or Entra ID migration. Those require Pro or Enterprise.
- Microsoft’s native cross-tenant SharePoint migration is available only to Enterprise Agreement customers. It is licensed per 100 GB moved. It is a one-time move with no incremental or delta passes (Microsoft Learn).
- SPMT’s documented sources are all on-premises: SharePoint Server 2010 through 2019, SharePoint Foundation 2010 and 2013, and file shares. It is not a SharePoint Online-to-SharePoint Online tool (Microsoft Learn).
- BitTitan charges per document library: $25 for up to 50 GB and $48 for up to 100 GB (BitTitan pricing).
- BitTitan’s SharePoint Online-to-SharePoint Online guide states that managed metadata, lookup, and external data columns are not supported, and that on-premises SharePoint is not supported as a source.
- Apps4.Pro lists Migration Manager at $5,995 for one machine installation and $8,995 for up to five installations, described as a one-time purchase (Apps4.Pro pricing).
- Kernel’s entry license is listed at $399 for 10 sites or subsites up to 1 TB. It is the lowest-cost paid entry point in this comparison that publishes a price (Kernel pricing).
Why Teams Look for a ShareGate Alternative
ShareGate is the tool many SharePoint admins learned on, and it remains a strong product. Teams usually start looking elsewhere for one of four reasons.
1. The licensing model doesn’t fit the project. ShareGate licenses by machine activation. Essentials tier allows 1 user on one workstation. Pro tier raises that to 5 and Enterprise tier to 25. For a one-off tenant merger, a recurring annual subscription can be harder to justify than a one-time or per-library purchase.
2. Throughput is tied to the plan. ShareGate states that parallel migrations are the main advantage of Pro and Enterprise over Essentials. Essentials runs one migration at a time.
3. A documented object doesn’t migrate. ShareGate’s help center maintains a limitations list of more than 120 articles. It covers workflow status, history, and tasks; user alerts; master pages and page layouts; list item IDs; and user profiles. Two other documented gaps matter for specific projects:
- When connected with modern authentication, ShareGate cannot migrate classic web part pages or basic pages, and the top navigation bar of team sites is not carried over (ShareGate docs).
- For records, retention policies are not migrated, “on hold” status is not preserved, and audit log history is not copied.
4. The rest of the tenant needs to move too. If SharePoint is one workload in a full tenant consolidation, some teams prefer one platform that also moves Teams chats, Planner Premium, Power Platform, and Viva Engage.
None of this makes ShareGate a bad choice. It means the right tool depends on your source, your content, and your budget model.
How We Compared These Tools
We evaluated all 10 tools against the same seven criteria:
- SharePoint source coverage (on-premises versions, SharePoint Online, file shares, other clouds)
- Site fidelity (site types, pages, lists, libraries, term store, lookups, versions, permissions)
- Incremental and delta support
- Deployment model
- Documented limitations
- Pricing model and published price
- Trial availability
What this review is: a comparison built from documentation. Sources, in priority order, were:
- vendor documentation and help centers
- vendor pricing pages
- Microsoft Learn
We report limitations only when the vendor or Microsoft documents them.
What this review is not: a lab benchmark. We did not run throughput tests and report no speed numbers of our own.
All prices were checked in September 2026 and should be confirmed with the vendor before purchase.

ShareGate Migrate: The Baseline
ShareGate Migrate is a downloadable Windows migration tool for SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, and file shares. It is licensed annually per machine activation, and higher plans add workloads and parallel migrations.
SharePoint capabilities
- Migrates SharePoint, Teams, and Planner from on-premises to cloud, tenant to tenant, back again, or within the same tenant or on-premises environment.
- Carries over metadata, versions, and permissions, and supports restructuring during the move.
- Includes incremental migrations that copy only what changed since the last run.
- Includes planning reports (inventory, permissions, checked-out documents, and a Source Analysis report) and a Permissions Matrix report.
Documented limitations
- Workflow status, history, and tasks, user alerts, master pages, list item IDs, and user profiles appear in ShareGate’s limitations collection.
- Classic web part pages cannot be migrated over modern authentication.
- Records retention policies, hold status, and audit logs are not carried.
Pricing
- Essentials $5,995, Pro $9,995, and Enterprise from $17,995 per year. Multi-year terms save up to 15%. Nintex migration is a paid add-on (ShareGate pricing).
- A full-featured 15-day trial is available.
Keep ShareGate if: you do recurring SharePoint administration and restructuring, not just a one-time move, and you value its reporting toolset.
1. Apps4.Pro Migration Manager: Best for SharePoint Online Tenant-to-Tenant Moves in a Full M365 Migration
Apps4.Pro Migration Manager moves SharePoint Online sites between tenants, or within one tenant, as part of a single platform that also migrates mailboxes, Teams, OneDrive, Planner, Forms, Power BI, Power Automate, and Viva Engage.
Apps4.Pro Migration Manager is built by JiJi Technologies. According to Apps4.Pro’s SharePoint guide, it uses its own registered Azure AD application with delegated permissions, works through CSOM and PnP PowerShell, and supports MFA and modern authentication, so security features don’t need to be disabled.
SharePoint capabilities
Per the Apps4.Pro SharePoint migration guide:
- Covers modern team sites, communication sites, classic sites, and hub sites.
- Migrates site collections, site permissions, modern site pages, subsites, lists, list items, libraries, site columns, content types, navigation, and regional and language settings.
- Carries lookup columns, item-level permissions, list item attachments, file version history, and both site-level and global term groups, each require a Term Store Administrator role.
- Lets you migrate all file versions or only the latest “n”. The guide recommends a maximum of 200 versions, because more versions slow the migration.
- Can migrate into a new site or append content into an existing site, list, or library.
- Incremental migration works by re-running completed tasks, and failed items can be retried.
- You can skip permissions on the first pass so active target users don’t see content early, then enable permissions and re-run.
- A Site Migration Summary report compares source and migrated counts for libraries, lists, list items, and files.
- Apps4.Pro states there are no limits on the number of sites, files, libraries, lists, permissions, or OneNote files, or on file size.
Documented limitations
- Not migrated: site logo and thumbnail, site sharing settings, guest expiration, wiki pages, web part page content, list item version history, alerts, comments, discussion boards, picture libraries, XML forms libraries, and SharePoint 2010 workflows.
- Source and target sites with the same name are not auto-mapped.
- Every member of a site receives an email notification when that site is migrated to the target. Plan your user communications around this.
- Apps4.Pro’s documented SharePoint scope is SharePoint Online. It is not the tool for an on-premises SharePoint Server farm.
Pricing
- $5,995 per single-machine installation, or $8,995 for up to five installations. Apps4.Pro’s pricing page describes this as a one-time purchase.
- The license covers every supported workload with no data-volume or item-count limit, and no per-user, per-team, or per-site restrictions (Apps4.Pro licensing).
- A 15-day free trial is available without a credit card.
Best fit: M&A and tenant consolidations where SharePoint is one of several workloads, and where you want a price that doesn’t grow with headcount.
Not a fit: on-premises SharePoint Server farms, or teams whose main need is legacy wiki or web part page migration.
2. AvePoint Fly: Best for Enterprise and Regulated Migrations from Legacy Farms
AvePoint Fly covers the widest range of SharePoint sources in this comparison, from SharePoint Server 2010 through Subscription Edition. It can run as AvePoint-hosted SaaS or self-hosted Fly Server.
SharePoint capabilities
Per AvePoint’s migration product page:
- Supported sources include SharePoint Server 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, and SE; SharePoint Online (site collections, sites, lists and libraries, files, folders, and configurations); file shares; Box; Dropbox; and Google Drive.
- Preserves permissions, versions, and sensitivity labels through advanced mapping.
- Uses bulk APIs, Azure BLOB storage, and app tokens to reduce throttling.
- Supports incremental migration while both environments stay online.
- After migration, you can merge, promote, demote, and split SharePoint sites and site collections.
- Discovery and scanning are free.
- STIG-certified Fly Server deployments are available for government and defense requirements.
- You can run the migration yourself or have AvePoint’s engineers manage it.
Limitations
- AvePoint does not publish a global list price, so budgeting requires a quote.
- It is typically more platform than a small project needs.
Pricing
- On the UK G-Cloud framework, Fly SaaS is priced per user per year with unlimited migration volume. Power Platform migration is priced separately by the number of apps and flows.
- AvePoint states that SaaS and self-hosted pricing are the same.
Best fit: large, uneven data volumes; legacy farms; regulated environments.
Not a fit: a 10-site move with a fixed small budget.
3. Quest Content Matrix and On Demand Migration: Best for Complex On-Prem Farms and Enterprise M&A
Quest covers SharePoint with two products. Content Matrix is a desktop console for on-premises SharePoint migrations. On Demand Migration (ODM) is a SaaS platform for SharePoint Online tenant-to-tenant projects.
SharePoint capabilities: Content Matrix
Per the Content Matrix user guide:
- Migrates into SharePoint 2019 or SharePoint Online, distributes workloads across any number of machines, and supports restructuring of sites, content, and metadata.
- Migrates Nintex forms and workflows and covers Exchange public folders and eRooms.
- Supports MFA for SharePoint Online, and paths up to the 400-character SharePoint Online limit.
SharePoint capabilities: On Demand Migration
Per Quest’s ODM SharePoint page:
- Discovers sites, libraries, and lists in the source tenant, then matches them to target sites or provisions new ones.
- Maps users so permissions carry over and preserves version history.
- Runs as cloud SaaS alongside Exchange, OneDrive, Teams, Active Directory, and Entra ID migration, with a real-time dashboard and coexistence.
Limitations
- Neither product has a public price list.
- Buying both a desktop console and a SaaS product for mixed projects adds procurement steps.
Pricing
- Quote-based.
- ODM consumes licenses by tier (T3, T5, T7), and an Exchange standalone license upgrades to a tier license when OneDrive or Teams chat is migrated.
Best fit: large enterprises with complex farms, Nintex dependencies, or multi-workload M&A programs.
Not a fit: small teams wanting transparent self-service pricing.
4. BitTitan MigrationWiz: Best for Pay-Per-Library Document Migrations
BitTitan MigrationWiz is SaaS migration priced per document library, which works well when a SharePoint project is really a document-library project.
SharePoint capabilities
- The Shared Documents license migrates files, folders, permissions, versions, and metadata from any supported source to SharePoint Online and Office 365 Groups.
- The Tenant Migration Bundle includes a choice of Teams migration or Shared Document 100 GB.
- Migrates up to 25 versions per file, counting both major and minor versions.
Documented limitations
Per BitTitan’s SharePoint Online-to-SharePoint Online guide:
- On-premises SharePoint is not supported. Managed metadata, lookup, and external data columns are not supported. Multiple-lines-of-text columns arrive as single-line text that cannot be updated at the destination.
- Document library settings are not migrated.
- Metadata that references data outside the library, such as lists or site-level data, is not migrated.
- BitTitan’s guides state that it only supports SharePoint Team Site and Communication Site destinations.
- “Anyone” and organization-wide sharing links from OneDrive are not migrated.
Pricing
- $25 per library up to 50 GB and $48 per library up to 100 GB. The Tenant Migration Bundle is $57 per user (BitTitan pricing).
- The unlimited data in the Tenant Migration Bundle does not extend to the Shared Document portion, which is capped at 100 GB.
Best fit: files-first projects with a known library count.
Not a fit: list-heavy sites that depend on lookups, managed metadata, or site structure.
5. Microsoft SPMT and Migration Manager: Best Free Option for On-Prem and Cloud-Storage Moves
SPMT and Migration Manager are Microsoft’s free tools for moving content into Microsoft 365. They do not perform SharePoint Online-to-SharePoint Online migrations.
SharePoint capabilities
- SPMT moves content from SharePoint Server 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019, SharePoint Foundation 2010 and 2013, and file shares into SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams (Microsoft Learn).
- It also migrates SharePoint Server 2010 out-of-the-box workflows and SharePoint Designer 2010 and 2013 workflows.
- Everything SPMT does is also available in PowerShell.
- Migration Manager adds Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, and Egnyte as sources (Microsoft Learn).
- Migration Manager runs lightweight agents on your own machines and is managed centrally from the admin center.
Documented limitations
- Migration Manager does not support Amazon S3 or Azure Blob storage.
- SPMT is not available for Office 365 operated by 21Vianet.
- If an on-premises server is configured with multiple authentication providers including Windows authentication, Windows authentication is not supported.
Pricing
Free.
Best fit: straightforward lift-and-shift from supported on-premises versions or cloud storage.
Not a fit: tenant-to-tenant moves or deep restructuring.
6. Microsoft Cross-Tenant SharePoint Migration: Best Native Option for EA Customers
Microsoft’s cross-tenant SharePoint migration moves sites between tenants without the content leaving the Microsoft 365 cloud. It is restrictive: one pass, new sites only, and Enterprise Agreement customers only.
Capabilities
Per Microsoft Learn:
- Up to 4,000 migrations can be scheduled at a time.
- A redirect is left at the source so existing links keep working.
- Supports Microsoft 365 group-connected sites (including Teams-connected), modern sites without a group, classic sites, and communication sites.
Documented limitations
- No incremental or delta passes.
- Target sites must not exist beforehand. An existing site cannot be overwritten or merged.
- Each site is capped at 5 TB or 1 million items.
- The migration fails if the source tenant uses Purview Customer Key.
- Workflows, apps, and Power Apps or Power Automate connections must be recreated on the target.
- Protection or policy tied to sensitivity labels does not carry over.
- Teams content and channel structure are not included.
Pricing
- Licensed per 100 GB of data moved. Available only to Enterprise Agreement customers through the Microsoft account team.
- No list price is published.
Best fit: EA customers doing a clean one-time move into new sites.
Not a fit: anyone needing coexistence, delta passes, or consolidation into existing sites.
7. Cloudiway: Best for MSPs and Non-Expiring Multi-Workload Licenses
Cloudiway is a SaaS migration platform whose licenses never expire and include unlimited delta passes. It supports site splits, merges, and classic-to-modern conversion during migration.
SharePoint capabilities
Per Cloudiway’s SharePoint migration page:
- Migrates site hierarchy, subsites, site collections, navigation, libraries with versions and metadata, lists, content types, columns, and modern and classic pages with web parts.
- Can convert classic sites to modern during migration.
- Supports SharePoint Online-to-SharePoint Online and on-premises SharePoint-to-SharePoint Online moves, using a mapping table to translate permissions.
- Delta sync migrates only changes after the first pass.
Documented limitations
- The migration account must authenticate without SSO or MFA, mainly because web part migration uses username and password authentication (Cloudiway admin guide).
- The account needs Site Collection Administrator rights on both tenants, and custom scripts must be enabled on target site collections for some features.
Pricing
- The Tenant Migration bundle is $580 for 20 licenses and covers all workloads except laptops. Unused credits can be converted to other license types (Cloudiway pricing).
- A free trial is available.
Best fit: MSPs running several tenant projects.
Not a fit: organizations whose security policy forbids a migration account without MFA.
8. CloudFuze: Best for Managed, High-Volume SharePoint Online Moves
CloudFuze pairs a SaaS migration engine with a managed service, aimed at large SharePoint Online tenant-to-tenant projects that are heavy on links and sharing.
SharePoint capabilities
Per CloudFuze’s SharePoint tenant-to-tenant page:
- Preserves root and nested folder and file permissions, internal and external sharing, hyperlinks, and shared links.
- Uses multi-threaded processing, with dedicated migration engineers to set up and manage projects.
- Retains timestamps and versions during OneDrive and SharePoint Online tenant moves.
Limitations
- Pricing is not published.
- CloudFuze’s public documentation focuses on files, permissions, and links rather than site-level objects such as term stores or pages, so confirm your site-level scope in the proof of concept.
Pricing
- Quote-based, depending on user count and data size. Both one-off and annual licenses are offered (CloudFuze pricing).
- Business users can trial up to 3 users or 50 GB.
Best fit: large consolidations that want engineers, not just software.
Not a fit: teams that need to budget from a public price list.
9. Kernel Migrator for SharePoint: Best Budget Desktop Tool, Including Legacy Servers
Kernel Migrator for SharePoint is a Windows desktop tool from KernelApps. It covers everything from legacy SharePoint Server to SharePoint Online tenant-to-tenant moves, with one-time tiered pricing.
SharePoint capabilities
- Supported versions are SharePoint 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, Subscription Edition, Foundation 2010 and 2013, and SharePoint Online.
- Migrates sites, subsites, team and communication sites, site pages, web parts, versions, permissions, SharePoint groups, list items, attachments, and InfoPath and workflow.
- Additional sources are file servers, public folders, Dropbox, Box, Amazon S3, and Google Drive.
- Supports delta passes, parallel batches, and scheduling.
Limitations
- It is a desktop app, so throughput depends on your own hardware.
- The standard trial is limited to 5 items per folder and 5 lists or libraries. An extended trial of one full site or 30 GB for 7 days can be requested.
Pricing
- $399 (listed down from $499) for 10 sites or subsites up to 1 TB, or 25 sites or subsites up to 2 TB (Kernel pricing).
- An unlimited SharePoint migration and backup bundle is $3,999 for a 1-year plan.
- A 30-day money-back guarantee applies.
Best fit: small or mid-size projects, including legacy servers, on a tight budget.
Not a fit: large M&A programs that need a SaaS control plane.
10. SysTools SharePoint Migrator: Best for Small SharePoint Online Site-to-Site Moves
SysTools SharePoint Migrator is a low-cost Windows tool for moving SharePoint Online sites between sites or tenants. It migrates at the full-site level only.
SharePoint capabilities
- Moves document libraries, document sets, folders, and generic lists.
- Maps user-level and group-level permissions through a CSV file.
- Supports date filters, delta migration, retrying failed items, and summary and detailed reports.
Documented limitations
- SysTools’ FAQ says the tool does not migrate on-premises SharePoint and points to a separate product for that.
- You cannot select individual files or folders within a site.
- The destination site must already exist, and you must create an Azure project first.
Pricing
- A one-time license, shown as $99 on the product page. Each source-to-destination pairing consumes license quota.
Best fit: a handful of SharePoint Online sites.
Not a fit: complex sites with pages, term stores, or selective migration needs.
Unique Insight: The Pricing Unit Matters More Than the Price
The tools in this comparison price by six different units. Which one is cheapest depends on the shape of your data, not just on the headline price.
Pricing unit | Tools | Cheapest when… |
|---|---|---|
Per machine or installation | ShareGate, Apps4.Pro | Many users and sites, few admins |
Per document library | BitTitan | Few, small libraries |
Per user | AvePoint, Quest ODM, Cloudiway bundles | Small headcount, large data |
Per data volume | Microsoft cross-tenant (per 100 GB), Kernel tiers | Low total GB |
Per site count | Kernel, SysTools | Under ~25 sites |
Custom quote | CloudFuze, AvePoint, Quest | Complex scopes where a managed service is wanted |
Worked example: 300 document libraries under 50 GB each would cost $7,500 at BitTitan’s published per-library rate. That is more than ShareGate Essentials ($5,995 per year) or Apps4.Pro’s single-installation price ($5,995). At 60 libraries, BitTitan costs $1,500 and is far cheaper. Count your libraries, sites, users, and gigabytes before you compare quotes.
Unique Insight: The SharePoint Objects That Separate These Tools
Most tools handle files, folders, and basic permissions. The differences show up in five object types:
1. Managed metadata and term store
- Apps4.Pro documents migrating site-level and global term groups.
- BitTitan documents managed metadata as unsupported.
2. Lookup columns
- Apps4.Pro documents lookup-column support.
- BitTitan documents lookups as unsupported.
3. Workflows
- SPMT migrates SharePoint 2010 OOTB and SharePoint Designer 2010/2013 workflows from on-premises.
- Quest Content Matrix handles Nintex.
- ShareGate sells a Nintex add-on and does not preserve workflow history.
- Microsoft’s cross-tenant method requires workflows to be rebuilt.
- Apps4.Pro does not migrate 2010 workflows.
4. Version history
- Caps differ: BitTitan migrates up to 25 versions, and Apps4.Pro recommends up to 200.
- Apps4.Pro migrates file versions but not list-item versions.
5. Classic and wiki pages
- Apps4.Pro does not migrate wiki pages.
- ShareGate cannot migrate classic web part pages over modern authentication.
- Cloudiway documents classic-to-modern conversion.
Run a pilot on a site that contains all five object types before you commit to a tool.
How to Choose a ShareGate Alternative: A 6-Step Checklist
- Inventory your sources. On-premises version, SharePoint Online, file shares, and other clouds. This alone eliminates several tools.
- Count your pricing units. Sites, libraries, users, gigabytes, and the number of admins or machines.
- List your hard objects. Term store, lookups, workflows, classic pages, and version depth.
- Decide on coexistence. If users keep working during the move, you need delta passes. That rules out Microsoft’s cross-tenant method.
- Check authentication policy. Some tools require a migration account without MFA.
- Pilot one representative site and compare the vendor’s migration report against your source counts.
